Protection of Personal Data – Rights of Human Subject Research (HSR) participants and/or Non-Human Subject Research (NHSR) participants

What is Human Subject Research (HSR)?

This research involves humans and it is designed  to increase biological or medical knowledge. The different types of HSR are :

  1. Interventional research, which tests interventions that are not part of the routine care of patients.
  2. Interventional research involving minimal risks and constraints, the list of which has been specified by the Minister of Health, after consulting with the General Director of the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety.
  3. Non-interventional research, which does not involve any risk or constraint for patients, in which all the procedures performed and products used are part of routine care.

What is Non-Human Subject Research (NHSR)?

These are health research, studies or evaluations that do not meet the definition of Human Subject Research :

  1. Research on biological data/samples already collected as part of treatment or medical care or from previous research.
  2. Research in which patients participate, and for which data is collected prospectively, but without meeting the definition of Human Subject Research (HSR).
